Wax Carving Introduction - Beginners

Class level: 
​Suitable for complete beginners. It will also suit somebody wanting to expand on their jewellery making skills. More advanced wax carving classes coming soon.

Outline: 
​During this 3 hour introduction to our wax carving workshop, you will learn a little bit about the casting process, receive an introduction to the tools you will use - including the use of a wax ring mandrel to size your ring. We will show you how to carve into the wax using a spirit lamp and the tools. You will then let your imagination run free as you carve a free form, organic shaped ring in the wax.

We offer a casting service, where we will send your ring away to be cast in sterling silver. Once it is returned to us, we will finish it - whether you'd like a shiny or oxidised look, and then returned  to you.

Alternatively, you can send it away to be cast yourself. (We provide a list of casting companies)

Prices for the casting service is extra. You can make a decision on the day and pay for this service at this time.  Prices will vary according to your choice of metal, but as an example, the cost of casting it in silver, the finishing process, and delivery will be about £50.00

Another great option, is that we, also offer Delft sand casting classes. In this class you will learn how to cast silver yourself. You can use your carved wax ring to  inset in the Delft sand, and then cast it in silver. You can use your ring as many times as you like, as it does not get damaged in the process.

This intimate unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is also a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts.

Techniques covered in each class:​
  • How to size your finger
  • How to carve a free form ring in wax
  • The opportunity to have it cast in a metal of your choice. There is a separate charge for this.

Materials provided:
  • Wax to carve a ring
  • Tools - Each bench will have its own spirit lamp,  wax saw blades, wax files and carving tools, a wax ring cutting mandrel - everything needed to complete your project.
  • Extra wax can be purchased on the day if needed.

    What to Bring:
  • This is a workshop environment, so your well being and safety is important to us. To ensure this is a safe - but fun environment for you to learn in; we ask that you please:
    ​
  • Wear comfortable old clothing, or bring an apron. Ear defenders and safety glasses are provided.
  • Long hair to be tied back. 
  • No loose flowing scarves, long sleeves or jewellery to be worn. These can easily get caught up in machinery.
  • Closed flat shoes - no sandals allowed.
  • Spectacles, if needed for close up work.
  • Notebook and pencil. Although we do provide some hand outs, you may want to take your own notes or draw sketches.​
