Casting - Sand

Picture
Sand Casting
Class level:

Beginners welcome. No experience needed.
No need to bring anything. Everything will be supplied.

About:
Sand casting is an ancient and widely used metal casting process where molten metal is poured into a sand mold to create a metal replica of the component.
A desired object is pressed into sand to form a replica cavity of the object. Molten metal is then poured in to fill the cavity, solidifies, and then the sand mold is opened to reveal the replica casting.

Ticket Option 2:  Includes £20.00 of silver casting grain.
Silver grain will be available to purchase on the day.

Outline:
We will begin the class with a discussion on sand casting and tools and needed for the process. We will also include a brief description of various casting methods, including the lost wax method.
You can either bring your own item which you'd like to cast. This item needs to be fairly solid as you will need to push it into the clay. We have sand cast organic items such as shells, twigs,  and  replicated special charms.  Don't worry if you don't have anything - we have loads of objects for you to cat

Mould Making:

You will begin by preparing your casting flask by filling 1 side of your flask with a special sand, generally known as delft clay. Then by pressing your chosen object into the sand, you will have an exact replica of your object.
You will then fill the other half of the flask. We will then show you where and how to cut the pouring and air vents.

Melting
Then the fun begins as you melt your silver in a crucible and pour the molten silver into your flask.  You will immediately be able to open the flask to see your cast item. How exciting is that? If it hasn't worked out well, you will be able to re-melt your silver and try again. There will be time to clean, file and polish your piece before turning it into a wearable piece of jewellery.
