Welcome To Metal & Flame, Jewellery School, Liverpool
Metal and Flame Jewellery school is situated in Litherland, Liverpool.  We are passionate about passing on traditional jewellery making and silversmithing skills to our students. M&F is a small but professional workshop equipped with all the tools needed for your classes. In our intimate and friendly studio we take no more than four students at a time. This provides a good tutor/student ratio, allowing for the support and guidance needed to enhance your skills. It also allows access to the various tools without waiting  for access for too long.

We offer various courses and workshops in silver jewellery and silversmithing. These vary from short one day taster classes, to longer six week courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. We also do in depth specialised workshops like making lockets and poison rings, box making, wax carving, enamelling, stone setting and various types of casting - like sand, cuttlefish, and organic (water, broom and food) casting.

In short, we teach everything to turn you into a professional jeweller.

Three and Six Week Block Courses
Our longer three and six week courses are designed to ensure you learn traditional jewellery and silversmithing techniques.

The Level 1 -Beginners course will cover techniques such as piercing, soldering, filing, Bezel setting and adding interest to your metal with texture and polishing.

In the Level 2 - Intermediate classes we cover patination, reticulation, fusing, granulation and tube settings.
During the Level 3 Advanced Classes, we cover techniques such as making your own tube and collet settings, whilst encouraging you to practice all your techniques learned in the previous courses.
In the Advanced+ Courses, we teach more complex techniques like making a locket using hinges, or delving into silversmithing techniques, like making a trinket box.

Our Jewellery making courses are as flexible as possible - we don't have specified pieces you have to make, but instead you are guided in whatever you choose to do. You will receive individual tuition at a pace suited to you. Everyone works on their own projects at their own pace, which has the extra benefit of creating a fabulously diverse range of techniques within one course.

Specialised Techniques Based Classes

Our specialised techniques based taster classes are for those with some jewellery making and soldering experience, and would like to learn more advanced techniques to enhance their jewellery making skills.

During these one day taster sessions, we delve into cuttle fish and Delft sand casting. Experiment with organic casting like pouring molten silver over dried food or into water.
Play with enamels to add colour to your work. We also offer wax carving classes, so you can carve your own piece of jewellery which can be sent away to be cast in silver.

Silversmithing
People often get confused between a jeweller and a silversmith.  As the name implies, a jeweller designs and creates all things jewellery related, but  a silversmith is a metalworker who crafts objects and vessels from silver or other precious metals. E.g vases, containers, wine coasters and cocktail swizzle sticks

It takes many years to learn and perfect some of these skills, like raising, chasing and repousse, but here at Metal and Flame, we will take you through some of the simpler aspects of silversmithing, by creating some decorative pieces, E.g a trinket box, tea light candle holders, wine coasters, or cocktail swizzle sticks.
