What to expect in this course:
Day 1 We will begin by introducing you to the absolute fundamentals of jewellery making and silversmithing. You will learn how to thread your jewellery saw and how to cut (pierce) out shapes and designs in copper. Your saw is one of the most essential pieces for making jewellery. So a good understanding is necessary. We then get to fire up the torches (small ones to begin with). We start by annealing (heating the metal to soften it). Followed by the various types of soldering techniques needed to make jewellery - ring, bangle, pendant, brooch or earrings . In fact the techniques learned will apply to all aspects of jewellery and silversmithing. |
Day 2
We start the day by learning how to do a Bezel/Rub over stone setting. Using one of our gemstones, you will then learn how to set a flat backed cabochon. Using punches, stamps and hammers we move on to texturing metal. After that we look at filing and polishing techniques. And last but certainly not least, we will discuss design and what you'd like to make in silver the following day. Each student can decide whether they want to make pendants, earrings or, rings. If you have no idea of what you'd like to make, we have some simple designs for you to begin working on. Our most popular projects made are - spinner and stacker rings and bezel set pendants. You too will be able to make these. Your tutor will discuss the aims and goals of each student and guide you in your chosen designs. |
Day 3.
After a wake up cup of coffee, it is time to start using the techniques learned and make your chosen design in sterling silver. You should be able to finish at least one piece of silver jewellery to a high standard which can take home and wear with pride, or even gift it to somebody.
