Claw/Basket Setting Pendant or Ring

Class level: 
Intermediate. A reasonable knowledge of soldering essential for this 1 day workshop.

All ages above 18 welcome. You are never too old to learn a new skill.


Outline: 
You will need traditional soldering skills for this setting. During this full one day workshop, Keith our experienced stone setter will guide you through stones and shapes suitable for claw setting and then take you through all the steps, which you will then put into practice.  You will learn the techniques required to create a claw/basket setting - which include:
  • How to make the base
  • Soldering on the claws
  • Cutting the seat
  • Soldering to either a bail or a ring shank.
  • Setting the stone
  • Polishing
Claw settings are very versatile and can be used in all sorts of jewellery pieces - stud earrings/pendants, brooches and of course rings. They can also be used for any shape, round, square, oval, pear etc.

Materials provided:
  • Copper wire and sheet to practice with.
  • An allocation of sterling silver.
  • 1 x cubic zirconia. You will be able to purchase metal and  stones on the day.

  • ​Refreshments:
  • Bring a packed lunch.
  • Endless tea, coffee and biscuits provided.

    What to Bring:
  • Wear old clothes, or bring an apron. Safety glasses will be provided
  • Long hair to be tied back. 
  • No long flowing sleeves or scarves. These can get caught in machinery
  • Closed shoes - no sandals.
  • Spectacles if you need them for close work
  • Notebook and pencil

We will take a short break for lunch, so please bring a packed lunch.
