Wax Carving Introductory Class - Beginner' Welcome

What is Wax Carving?
Wax carving for jewellery is an ancient practice that dates back around 6,000 years. This method allows jeweller's to create detailed models from wax, which are then used to produce metal pieces through either sand casting or the lost-wax casting process.
Wax carving is a great technique to add to your jewellery making skills.
Class level:
All abilities. Suitable for complete beginners, but also aimed at those wanting to expand on their jewellery making skills.
We will cover all the basics to be able to start your journey into wax carving.

Outline:
During this 3 1/2 hour fun and creative introduction to our wax carving workshop, you will first learn a little bit about the ancient art of the lost wax casting process - whether being professionally cast using the lost wax method, or sand casting it yourself in our workshop.

You will also receive an introduction to all the tools you will use - including the use of a wax ring reamer to size and carve your ring.

We will show you how to carve your desired design into the wax using carving tools and a spirit lamp. You can then let your imagination run wild as you carve a free form, organic shaped ring in the wax. Once you are happy with your design, you will then be shown how to smooth and finish your wax to give it a finished and polished look and ready for casting,

Please note: This class is only for wax carving. Casting prices are not included.

Casting Options:
If you'd like to cast your design in metal, we have two options for you.
For an extra fee, you have a choice of whether you'd like us to send it away to be professionally cast; or if you prefer, you could join one of our sand casting classes to cast your ring in silver yourself.

Option One
Professionally Cast
For an additional cost of £60.00 (costs may vary according to the weight of your design),  We offer a casting service, where we will send your ring away to be professionally cast in sterling silver.  Once it is returned to us, we will clean and polish it and then return it  to you.
Alternatively, you can of course send it away to be cast yourself. (We provide a list of casting companies)

Class Option 2
Cast it yourself
We also teach sand casting classes. In this class you will learn how to cast your ring yourself. You can use your carved wax ring as a master. You will then be shown all the necessary steps on how to cast your ring. The good news is that you can use your wax ring as many times as you want, as it does not get damaged in the process.
