Class level: Intermediate - Level 2
This is an extremely intensive and comprehensive metal smith course, and continues on from our Level one course. The aim of this course is to teach you the absolute fundamentals of jewellery making - so by the end of the second term, you will have covered all the basic skills and techniques of a traditional jeweller. Once completed, it will allow you to go ahead and start making your own silver and gold jewellery. If you have done our beginners course, by the time you have completed this course, you will have made an entire collection of jewellery - Stacking rings, spinner rings, charm bracelet chain and hook, slim bangles, cuff bangles, pendants, earrings (both stud and hoop) a bezel stone set ring, and a reticulated a pendant. That is quite an achievement! If you think about it - it will have only taken about 24 hours to not only learn new skills, but you will have produced some lovely jewellery pieces. |
|
Using only a small selection of hand tools, you will receive a very good grounding in the absolute fundamentals of being a metal smith, which will enable you to set up your own workshop at a reasonable price, and to continue working on your own in the future.
All tuition, tools and materials are included. We work primarily in copper, though you will make some items in sterling silver (bezel, tube setting and reticulation). If you'd like to use silver in the various projects, you can either purchase your own, or buy from Tracy on the day. She can also order in silver for you.
We also provide handouts for each of the techniques you will learn during this course.

What to expect from this course:
Week 1
Sweat soldering. This type of soldering technique is used if you want to create layers in your work. You will pierce out your two layered design, and then sweat solder them together.
Week 2
Earrings - Studs and Hoops. In this week's lesson, you will be shown how to solder posts onto stud earrings. We will show you how to twist wire, before you go on to make some copper twisted wire hoops.
Week 3
Chain making. You will be shown how to make and form links and solder each ring closed. Using copper, you can then make a charm bracelet. You can choose whether you want to make each link a uniform size, or if you'd prefer to make random shapes and sizes. You can thin finish it off with your choice of either an 'S' hook or a T.bar clasp - sometimes know as a toggle clasp or a bar and ring clasp.
Week 4
Granulation, Fusing and Reticulation. This week is all about melting your melting. We show you the fun art of making granulation balls, how to fuse metal, and one of my most favourite techniques - reticulation. You will be provided with an allocation of silver for all of these techniques. You can then turn your reticulated piece into a piece of jewllery..
Week 5
Bezel Setting. Bezel Setting. You will be introduced to some stone setting tools. You can practice on a piece of copper first. You will then receive some silver sheet and bezel wire and a choice of gemstone to create a bezel set ring.
Week 6
Hollow forms. There are so many options and designs for hollow forms. We will explore and expand on the techniques each term. In the first term we made half hollow forms using doming punches. We now move on to a full hollow form. Using copper, you can use either hammers, or the rolling mill to texture your metal. This will be followed by using the hydraulic press and dies, to create your hollow forms. We have lots of different die shapes, from tear drops to hearts which you can choose from. Once formed you then solder the two halves together to form a hollow form.
If you'd like to learn more, then you can continue with our Level 2 intermediate course, ( https://www.metalandflame.co.uk/level-2---intermediate-6-week-course.html) where you will be shown many more exciting techniques, such as - tube setting, fold forming and creating hollow shapes using the hydraulic press to create lockets.

Our Workshop:
This unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts, or may even be the start of a new career.
Each student bench has its own complete set of hand tools which comprise pliers - including parallel pliers, files - both needle and flat, dividers, a ring clamp, ring mandrel, rawhide hammer and more. Each bench also has its own complete soldering station with soldering turntable, two hand held torches and various tweezers, picks and third hands. They also each have their own quick release Foredom pendant drill and an overhead light with magnifier.
The workshop also has a larger tool section - such as a rolling mill, hydraulic press, pillar drill and bench grinder and polisher. Although each bench has its own soldering station - we also have a large dedicated solder station. This has two large Sievert gas torches, as well as a Smiths Little torch for all our casting workshops or for those large pieces of jewellery which need more heat than a hand held torch can deliver.
We can only accommodate 5 students in our classes; therefore early booking is essential.
For students under 18, you will need a parent's consent to attend these classes.
Any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Tracy at - Email: [email protected] or Phone: 07814 883 443
