Intermediate and Open Course
Level 2 - 5 Week Jewellery Course
Evening Classes
Intermediate course:
This is a continuation of the Beginners course. You will be furthering your skill set by learning several different techniques which are outlined below. For level 2, you must have either completed our Beginner's course, or have some experience with saw piecing and soldering.
Level:
Not suitable for Beginners (we have Beginners classes too. https://www.metalandflame.co.uk/multi-week-courses.html
During this course, we will be teaching you different techniques; however, unlike our Beginners course, where you had set pieces to work on - this time each student will use the new techniques being taught as well as incorporating previously learned skills into their own designs. Everybody has different tastes and design ideas, so this is a time to use your design skills.
During our term classes we also run demonstrations which are either relevant to student projects or to those who have requested a certain technique.
We are very much here to support your development. The more terms you complete with us, the more time you have to develop a wide range of skills and a good understanding of the industry as a whole. This time honoured profession takes time and practice to perfect your skills and techniques.
This unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts, or may even be the start of a new career.
During the first session, any new students are given a safety briefing, and a tour of the workshop so you feel comfortable within the space.
Each student bench has its own complete set of hand tools which comprise a set of various pliers - including parallel pliers, files - both needle and flat, dividers, a ring clamp, ring mandrel, rawhide hammer and more. Each bench also has its own a complete soldering station with turntable, two hand held torches and various tweezers and a third hand. They also each have a quick release Foredom pendant drill and an overhead light with magnifier.
The workshop also has a larger tool section - such as a rolling mill, hydraulic press, pillar drill and bench grinder and polisher. Although each bench has its own soldering station, we also have a large dedicated solder station. This has two large Sievert gas torches, as well as a Smiths Little torch for all our casting workshops or for those large pieces of jewellery which need more heat than a hand held torch can deliver.
For students under 18, you will need a parent's consent to attend these classes.
We can only accommodate 5 students in our classes, therefore early booking is essential.

Week 1
Melting and Fusing: The session is all about changing the structure of your silver into something else. You will be shown the fun technique of making silver granulation balls. We also look at fusing, and reticulation - all wonderful techniques to add to your skill set. You will be provided with an allocation of silver to practice these techniques with.
Week 2
Hollow Forms - Using copper, we will use the hydraulic press and dies, to create hollow forms. You can also choose to make a sliding locket. No need for hinges with this lovely simple design. Using copper, you will form two identical shapes. You can then decide whether you want to texture it using hammers or the rolling mill, or even solder on an accent. The choice is yours. If you'd like to make this locket in sterling silver, you are welcome to purchase your own silver, or you can purchase from Tracy on the day.
Week 3
Tube setting: In the first course you learned how to make a bezel/rub over stone setting; this time we'll look at the ever popular tube setting. You will also be introduced to the pendant motor. Our first course was all about using hand tools, and now you will now be introduced to machinery to further your skill set. You will be provided with sterling silver and cubic zirconias for this project. You can then make either a tube set ring, or pendant.
Week 4
Chain Making - During this class you will learn how to solder links together. You can either create a regular or free form chain - to make a bracelet. Using copper wire, you will make each link using traditional jewellery making skills such as how to size, shape and solder your links together. You can then choose between a Shepard's hook clasp or a ring toggle with bar. This is a great project to improve your soldering skills.
Week 5
Domed Flowers or Orbs - You will be shown how to use a disc cutter, and then shown how you can create domes - which can be used for all sorts of thing - including making beads.
