BOOK A COURSE

Class level: Level 1 Beginners

We show you how to create beautiful jewellery using traditional jewellers' hand tools and torches. No expensive machinery or equipment needed.

During this 6 week course you will learn all the basics, like how to cut and pierce (saw out) your metal, different types of soldering techniques, how to texture your metal using tools, punches and hammers. How to form and shape your metal, and how how to file and polish your work to give your jewellery a lovely professional finish.

You will learn the correct way to use your tools and to perfect techniques.
This means that once you have completed the course, you will be able to start making your own silver and gold jewellery.  But please be aware, like every new skill you learn, you will need to do lots of practicing.

This course shows you how using only a small selection of hand tools, you will receive a very good grounding in the absolute fundamentals of being a metal smith, which will enable you to one day set up your own workshop  and to continue working on your own in the future. But please be aware, like every new skill you learn, you will need to do lots of practicing.

Although this is a structured course, there is still plenty of scope to bring in your own individuality and creativity in each of the designs you will be making.

You will leave the course having made, a pendant or charm, 3 x stacking rings, a spinner ring, bangles and a cuff bangle and learned how to to s bezel stone setting. Each to your own design.
We only have five students at a time which allows a good student teacher ratio.

By the end of the course you will have learned techniques such as:
  • Saw Piercing
  • Annealing
  • Soldering
  • Texturing
  • How to measure stones and metal
  • Filing - going through all the grades and making a buff stick
  • Cleaning and polishing your jewellery
  • Bezel Stone Setting
Hand Tools used:

  • Piercing saw
  • Soldering torches
  • Ring sizer
  • Ring and Bangle Mandrels
  • Jewellery Files
  • Hammers - metal, raw hide and textured
  • Vice and/or Hydraulic Press
  • Dies for shaping rings and bangles
By the end of the course you will have made:
  • A silhouette pendant
  • A set of three plain or wavy stacking rings
  • A spinner ring
  • A cuff bangle
  • A thin bangle, with dangle charm
  • A bezel stone set charm or pendant.
All tuition, consumables, tools and materials are included. We work primarily in copper. If you'd like to use silver in the various projects, you can either purchase your own, or buy from Tracy on the day. She can also order in silver for you.

We also provide notes for each of the techniques you will learn during this course.
What to expect from this course:
Week 1
Cutting Metal and Pendant Making. During the first session there will be a discussion on health and safety in the workplace followed by an introduction to the workshop, we then move onto the exciting bit by discussing the  followed  before we move on to discussing the jeweller's bench - height, chair, bench skins and jeweller's peg.
Then we get into the fun bit - actually making a piece of jewellery!
First up is the Jeweller's saw. One of the most important and necessary tools in jewellery making. You will mostly use the saw to cut out (pierce) your metal. After an introduction to the saw frame and the type of saw blades you would use, you will be shown the correct and safe way to pierce out your metal. After practicing, you can then pierce out a small silhouette design of your own choice  which can either be a pendant,  or a charm.  You will also be shown how to make jump rings, to allow you to attach your piece to a chain.

Week 2
Soldering and Stacking rings! You will be shown how to safely operate the two hand torches provided at each student bench.  You will learn all about the different types of fluxes, types of solder, and the soldering tools needed - as well as how to clean your metal in a pickle pot.
We then move on to the exciting part - soldering!
We will begin by using ring sizer's and mandrels to size your rings. Using copper, our first project will be to make  3 stacking rings.  Once you have completed them, you will be inducted on the hydraulic press - where using some metal dies, you can turn your rings into lovely wavy designs. Or, if you prefer, you can solder on a little accent which you pierced out in week 1. You will also be introduced to jewelry files and how to use them to neaten up your work and remove any burrs or excess solder.

Week 3
Texturing and Spinner Rings - We will continuing with soldering and ring making, by making a copper spinner ring.
But first, we introduce you to the different hammers and punches we use to texture the metal. You can try out the different hammer strike marks - from bark to dimpled hammered textures. Or you can use our decorative punches to stamp out a lovely design or even stamp a name or special word or date onto the metal. You then move onto actually measuring your ring band, and then texturing, with your chosen design. We then solder it, using a slightly different soldering technique to what we did with the stacking rings in the previous week.

Week 4
Polishing and Spinner Ring, continued
- This week we will continue with our spinner rings.  Once the rings the main band has been soldered, you then make some spinners. As with your stacking rings from the previous week, these spinners can either be left plain or made wavy using the press, or you can solder an  accents onto the spinners.
You will then be shown 3 different ways of how to flare the edges of your ring to so that the thin spinner rings do not fall off.
During this week you will also be introduced to polishing. You will learn how to make a buff stick, and how to go through the different grades of emery paper  to bring your work up to a high shine.

Week 5
Bangles - Cuff and Bangle -  Using copper, you will learn how to measure, form and shape bangles on a bangle mandrel. You then solder it together to form a solid bangle.  You can add a dangly charm or bead to the bangle if you like - or you can once again use the hydraulic press and dies, to turn your bangle into a wavy one.
After that you can make a copper cuff bangle. You can  also texture the cuff bangles with hammers, or use decorative punches or stamp a design or name onto it.You will be shown how to measure and size before shaping them on a bangle mandrel. You can  also texture the cuff bangles with hammers, or use decorative punches or stamp a design or name onto it.

Week 6
Bezel Stone Setting Charm. You will choose your gemstone from our collection before we start. You will then be shown how to measure your stone and then size and solder your bezel wall. After that you will be introduced to some stone setting tools and shown how to rub/push over the sides of the walls to secure your stone.

By the end of the course you will have created a pendant, a set of 3 stacking rings, a spinner ring, a cuff bangle, a bangle, and a stone set pendant or charm.

Please note, that although you have been taught some of the traditional skills needed to make jewellery, you will still need to practice, practice practice, until you have a good understanding  of your metal and the techniques needed to fabricate jewellery.

If you'd like to continue on your jewellery making journey, join us for our Intermediate course where you will be shown many more exciting techniques, such as - stud earring soldering, hoop earrings, tube stone setting, chain making, and twisted metal cuffs.

Our Workshop:

This unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts, or may even be the start of a new career.

E
ach student bench has its own complete set of hand tools which comprise pliers - including parallel pliers, files - both needle and flat, dividers, a ring clamp, ring mandrel, rawhide hammer and more. Each bench also has its own complete soldering station with soldering turntable, two hand held torches and various tweezers, picks and third hands. They also each have their own quick release Foredom pendant drill and an overhead light with magnifier.

The workshop also has a larger tool section - such as a rolling mill, hydraulic press, pillar drill ,bench grinder and polisher. Although each bench has its own soldering station - we also have a large dedicated solder station. This has two large Sievert gas torches, as well as a Smiths Little torch for all our casting workshops, or for those large pieces of jewellery which need more heat than a hand held torch can deliver.
