This advanced course is a continuation of the Beginners and Intermediate courses. You will be furthering your skill set by learning several different techniques which are outlined below. For this course you must have at least completed our Beginner's course, or have some experience with saw piecing and soldering.
During this course, we will be teaching you different techniques; however, unlike our Beginners course, where you had set pieces to work on - this time each student will use the new techniques being taught as well as incorporating previously learned skills into their own designs. Everybody has different tastes and design ideas, so this is a time to use your design skills. We are very much here to support your development. The more terms you complete with us, the more time you have to develop a wide range of skills and a good understanding of the industry as a whole. This time honoured profession takes time and practice to perfect your skills and techniques. |
What to expect from this course
Week 1
Tube Setting. In the Beginner's course you learned how to make a bezel/rub over stone setting; this time we'll look at the ever popular tube setting. You will also be introduced to the pendant motor. Our first course was all about using hand tools, and now you will now be introduced to machinery to further your skill set. You will be provided with sterling silver and cubic zirconias for this project. You can then make either a tube set ring, or pendant.
Week 2
Hollow Forms - Continuing with hollow forms we did in the Intermediate Class - but this time we will be making sliding lockets. Using copper, you can use either hammers, or the rolling mill to texture your metal. Or, you can solder an accent onto the top of it. This will be followed by using the hydraulic press and dies, to create your hollow forms. We have lots of different die shapes, from tear drops to hearts to squares and circles. The choice is yours. There is no need for hinges with this lovely simple locket design. If you'd like to make this locket in sterling silver, you are welcome to purchase your own silver, or you can purchase from Tracy on the day.
Week 3
Hollow Forms cont - You will continue working on your locket.
Week 4
Claw/Prong Stone Setting Class. We will guide you through the different stones and shapes suitable for claw setting and will then take you through all the steps, of creating your own claw setting - which you will then put into practice.
Claw or prong settings as they are sometimes known by - are very versatile and can be used in all sorts of jewellery pieces - stud earrings/pendants, brooches and of course rings. They can also be used for any shape, round, square, oval, pear etc.
Week 5
Rivets - You will be shown how to do various types of rivets. You can then design your own layered pendant, using one of these techniques
Week 6
Free session - This is a perfect opportunity for you to create your own design. Or you can finish off any work which has not been completed throughout this course.

Our Workshop:
This unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts, or may even be the start of a new career.
Each student bench has its own complete set of hand tools which comprise pliers - including parallel pliers, files - both needle and flat, dividers, a ring clamp, ring mandrel, rawhide hammer and more. Each bench also has its own complete soldering station with soldering turntable, two hand held torches and various tweezers, picks and third hands. They also each have their own quick release Foredom pendant drill and an overhead light with magnifier.
The workshop also has a larger tool section - such as a rolling mill, hydraulic press, pillar drill and bench grinder and polisher. Although each bench has its own soldering station - we also have a large dedicated solder station. This has two large Sievert gas torches, as well as a Smiths Little torch for all our casting workshops or for those large pieces of jewellery which need more heat than a hand held torch can deliver.
We can only accommodate 5 students in our classes; therefore early booking is essential.
For students under 18, you will need a parent's consent to attend these classes.
