Experience Level: Beginner's
Our Level 1 Beginner's course is suitable for those with no previous experience and is a great taster for those taking their first steps into a wonderfully creative field. The aim of this foundation course is to teach you the fundamentals of silversmithing and jewellery making. By the end of this comprehensive intensive course, you will have covered all the basics of traditional metalsmithing. You will learn all the basic techniques - like how to pierce (saw) your metal, different types of soldering techniques, how to texture your metal using tools and hammers, filing and polishing and also how to set a cabochon gemstone with a bezel/rub over setting. By the end of this 3 day Intensive course, you will be able to make a pendant, bangles and cuff bangles, earrings and rings - including stacking and spinner rings, and how to set a cabochon gemstone. |
Using only a small selection of traditional jewellery hand tools, you will receive a very good grounding in the basics and fundamentals of metalsmithing, which will enable you to continue working on your own in the future.

We mostly use copper for our beginner classes, but if you'd prefer to make your items in sterling silver - there is a surcharge for the silver.

Day 1. Morning
Cutting Metal and Pendant Making. During the first session you will receive an introduction to the workshop, followed by a discussion on health and safety in the workplace. We will then discuss the jeweller's bench. We will begin by introducing you to the absolute fundamentals of jewellery making and silversmithing. The Jeweller's saw. One of the most important and necessary tools in jewellery making. You will learn how to thread your jewellery saw and how to cut out (pierce) shapes and designs in copper. You will practice a bit first before before piercing out a small silhouette design of your own choice which can either be a pendant, or a charm. You will also be shown how to make jump rings, to allow you to attach your piece to a chain. Afternoon Soldering. You will be shown how to safely operate the two hand torches provided at each student bench. You will learn all about the different types of fluxes, types of solder, and the soldering tools needed - as well as how to clean your metal in a pickle pot. We then move on to the exciting part - soldering! We will begin by using ring sizer's and mandrels to size your rings. Using copper, your first project will be to make 3 stacking rings. Once you have completed them, you will be inducted on the hydraulic press - where using some metal dies, you can turn your rings into lovely wavy designs. Or, if you prefer, you can solder on a little accent which you pierced out earlier in the morning. |
Day 2 . Morning
Texturing and Spinner Rings - We will continuing with soldering and ring making, by making a copper spinner ring. We begin the class with the texturing of your metal using different hammers and punches. You can try out the different hammer strike marks - from bark to dimpled hammered textures. Or you can use our decorative punches to stamp out a lovely design or even stamp a name or special word or date onto the metal. After practicing for a bit - We move onto measuring your ring size, and then texturing it with your chosen design. You will be shown a slightly different soldering technique to the one used for the stacking rings the previous day. Once you've completed that - you can make some spinner rings to go around the band - before flaring it. Afternoon Bangle. Using copper, you will learn how to measure, form and shape bangles on a bangle mandrel. You then solder it together to form a solid bangle. You can either add a dangly charm (made the previous day) or bead to the bangle if you like - or you can once again use the hydraulic press and dies, to turn your bangle into a wavy one. Cuff Bangle. After that you can make a copper cuff bangle. Once again you can texture your cuff with hammers or punches. You will be shown how to measure and size before shaping them on a bangle mandrel. |
Note: We use copper for all the projects. If you'd like to use silver there is a surcharge. This can be decided during each class, and paid in cash to Tracy during the session.

Day 3.
We start the day by learning how to do a Bezel/Rub over stone setting. Using one of our gemstones, you will then learn how to set a flat backed cabochon. Using punches, stamps and hammers we move on to texturing metal. After that we look at filing and polishing techniques. And last but certainly not least, we will discuss design and what you'd like to make in silver the following day. Each student can decide whether they want to make pendants, earrings or, rings. If you have no idea of what you'd like to make, we have some simple designs for you to begin working on. Our most popular projects made are - spinner and stacker rings and bezel set pendants. You too will be able to make these. Your tutor will discuss the aims and goals of each student and guide you in your chosen designs. After a wake up cup of coffee, it is time to start using the techniques learned and make your chosen design in sterling silver. You should be able to finish at least one piece of silver jewellery to a high standard which can take home and wear with pride, or even gift it to somebody. |
The small unisex class which is held in our Liverpool workshop, is also a great environment to develop your creativity and do something fun with like-minded people. It also offers the opportunity to make lovely original gifts, and might even be the start of a new career.

For students under 18, you will need a parent's consent to attend these classes.
We can only accommodate 5 students per class. Therefore early booking is essential.
